Florida Wheelie Charges

Wheelies, a form of stunt driving defined by Florida law as “a maneuver performed while operating a motor vehicle whereby a motor vehicle is ridden for a distance with the front wheel or wheels raised off the ground” are highly dangerous and thus prohibited by law. Penalties For Wheelies In Florida

Classified as a form of stunt driving by Florida statute 316.191, wheelies are outlawed because performing them is dangerous and can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles, resulting in accidents.

The penalties for performing wheelies differ based on how many times a driver commits the offense. After the first offense, wheelies are classified as a first-degree misdemeanor and are punishable with fines of between $500 and $2,000 and a driver’s license revocation for 1 year.

If a driver repeats the same offense within the same year, this is a third-degree felony and comes with a fine between $2500 and $4000 and 2 year driver’s license revocation. If a driver repeats the offense a third time within five years of the prior offense, they could be charged with a second-degree felony and face fines between $3,500 and $7,500 and have their license revoked for 4 years.

Florida Wheelie Law Exceptions

Though wheelies are generally strictly outlawed in Florida, one exception does exist. Florida law has an exception for situations where a vehicle’s front wheel or wheels briefly lose contact with the ground due to circumstances beyond the driver’s control. An unintended lifting of the front wheels is treated differently from deliberately performing a wheelie.
