Here are some of our tips for eliminating moisture and stopping mold in its tracks.

Do not rely on your air conditioner

Your initial reaction to minimize mold may be to keep your air conditioner set to lower temperatures. However, as the summer temperatures skyrocket, the colder air conditioned air creates condensation. Damp, moist areas are a breeding ground for mold. Not only does setting your thermostat higher decrease your chances for building mold, it also lowers your energy bill! We’d call that a win win.

Keep humidity levels at a minimum.

All windows and doors should be kept closed on hot, humid days, especially if you have your air conditioner running. The contrast in air temperatures will cause condensation to form. Like we mentioned previously, mold loves condensation. You can also consider purchasing a whole house dehumidifier. You can find several recommendations online. Just have a quick Google.

Run your extractor fan

There’s nothing better than a hot shower after a long, stressful day. Mold couldn’t agree more. Make sure you run your bathroom extractor fan during your shower and for at least 15 minutes after. Your extractor fan takes all the excess moisture and forces it outside. So long, Mold!

Inspect your home regularly.

Check bathroom, kitchen and other plumbing for leaks and water damage. Don’t forget the attic and crawl spaces.

Clean your filters

Clean or replace the HVAC filters in your home on a regular basis. Not only does this help prevent mold, it also increases the life of the system as well as the the energy efficiency of your home.

No matter how many preventative measures we take to guard our homes against mold, spores can still find their way inside. If you are experience mold damage and have any questions regarding your homeowners insurance policy, contact an attorney at the Law Offices of Michael B. Brehne.
